Global society that shares knowledge

Strengthening the foundations of Global

Goal 17 of the SDGs states, "Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development." This is the foundation for supporting the achievement of the other SDGs (1-16) through cooperation between various actors, including countries and regions around the world, companies, and civil society organizations. It emphasizes the importance of sharing funds, knowledge, and technology and collaborating to address issues that cannot be solved by a single country or organization alone.

Diversifying and strengthening the means of implementation:
Goal 17 calls for strengthening a wide range of means of implementation, including financing, technology transfer, capacity building, trade facilitation, and data development. Specific targets include improving the taxation capacity of developing countries, expanding Official Development Assistance (ODA), utilizing social impact investment, and promoting advanced technologies, including ICT. These are the foundations for achieving sustainable development.

Promoting multi-stakeholder
partnerships: Collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including governments, private companies, civil society, and international organizations, is essential to revitalizing global partnerships. Multi-stakeholder partnerships are frameworks for sharing risks, responsibilities, expertise, and funding, and working together toward common goals. This promotes knowledge sharing and innovation across regions and countries.

The role of companies and local communities and the latest trends:
In Japan, companies are incorporating the SDGs into their management strategies, and there is a growing trend to balance solving social issues with economic development. Efforts to balance sustainability and innovation, such as ESG investment and Society 5.0, are attracting attention. Local governments, educational institutions, and civic groups are also playing important roles as partners.

To solve global challenges and
achieve sustainable development for the future, it is essential to strengthen cross-border cooperation and concrete means of implementation. Various forms of collaboration are required, including cooperation between developed and developing countries, South-South cooperation, and triangular cooperation. In the future, not only will funding and technology be important, but data, policy consistency, and enhanced accountability will also be important themes. It is hoped that through global partnerships, a sustainable society in which no one is left behind will be realized.
